Behind the lens - Using the different modes of your SLR

When I started shooting with an SLR camera I did not dare to explore my camera´s options for a way to long time. I know how it is to stick to program mode, just to be on the safe side. A couple of people asked me how you can use the different modes in a better way. So today I will TRY to approach this field of technical things which are a mystery to many. ;-) I am sure it is not perfect, nor complete with all the things you could do, but it is an approach to explain and if just one person thought it helpful, ah! That is all I can ask for.

So most SLR cameras have four different modes you can use for shooting. Before we get to them you have to remember that there are two numbers you have to keep in check for the shooting. The shutter (speed of the mirror flapping down) and aperture (how much light is let in the camera body) forgive my not so technical language, haha.

There is Program mode – you know it. The camera calculates both of the numbers for you. Easy and safe. I started to use it less and less, because I want to be in control of light. Often with tricky light situations, this mode gets in the way of the result you might want.

With Shutter Priority – you set the shutter speed and the camera takes care about the aperture. This is very handy, when you are taking pictures of quick moving subjects. This way you can make sure there is no blur in your images. I personally use this mode almost never.

In Aperture mode - you are in charge of the aperture and the shutter is calculated. This is nice if you want to be in charge of dept of field.

The last and best mode is: Manual – you are in charge of both numbers! Whew. I am growing to love it more and more. And no worries, I am still on my way to perfect this one. :-) This mode is especially handy if you have tricky light situations, where the P mode could be tricked into calculating numbers wrong. For example back-lit pictures are a hundred times better to handle with M. Whereas the P mode might under or over expose your subject with M you can decide how much light you want your subject to be lit.

How to find out more about M mode: Here is how I started, embarrassing – I know. I took my camera and checked the numbers my camera gave me in the P mode, then I switched to M mode and tried out a couple of number above and beyond in both shutter and aperture. You will see, after a bit you find what works better for your specific situation.

So now it´s your turn! It takes a lot of practice to just shoot with manual and I am not there yet. But oh, I am on my way! So practice, practice, practice, once you did these little plays, your images will improve, like so amazingly!!! Promise.

Have a fabulous Evening!
